It all started when…
Urban Sprouts came to LMNOP Design Inc with the desire to create an off-the-grid outdoor kitchen for the June Jordan School of Equity community garden. The kitchen acts as a hands-on classroom for students as well as a place to connect and serve the Bay Area. From concept sketches with the client to fabrication and installation, LMNOP took on the full design-build scope of work for this shipping container project.
As an intern, I took the design lead on this budget-conscious, community focused project. Throughout the project I was in direct communication with the client while working in tandem with the project manager and build team. The design incorporates many sustainable features to compliment the off-the-grid context. Electric lighting and kitchen appliances are powered off 6 solar panels fixed to the roof while water is sourced through a rainwater collection and filtration system.
Additionally, the kitchen serves as the through-way between the garden and the table. The shipping container opens on two sides to provide fluid movement from the garden and on to the sink and prep stations, before moving on to the cooking area. The kitchen provides a space for up to 10 students to cook and enjoy their hard work! The Urban Sprouts outdoor kitchen has since enjoyed a season of community gatherings and support. Groups like KIDmob have run workshops with the students of JJSE that include the painting of the container.
